Egypt today is home to around 87 million people! It is in the 3rd state of the Demographic Transition. Its most populous cities are: Cairo at almost 9 million, Giza at 7 million, and Al-Sharqiyah at 6 million.
Demography
Many people move internally in the country for reasons like better jobs, higher pay, and wider availability of jobs. Educated individuals in the country are more likely to move compared to people like farmers, due to the low food production and growth rate. Most of the people that move into cities are coming from other cities compared to rural areas. Egyptians travel abroad to develop trade links that open new markets, to transfer new skills that have been developed internationally, and to send money and finance back home. Education wise, 41.6% of the population over the age of 10 have no formal schooling. Only 9.4% of the people went to a university, and O.2% have an advanced degree. The illiteracy rate is a staggering 72% of the population over 15! On the subject of health, the IMR is 14, and the life expectancy is relatively high 73. The availability of healthcare is a pretty good with hundreds of hospitals, but only about 1 physician for every 771 people. Although healthcare isn't currently at it's best, it is on the rise!
