Folk Culture
Folk Culture still exists in Egypt in areas such as: *Art *Clothing *Foods Most of the Folk Culture keeps to its traditional values but most have had some sort of minor influence of Pop Culture, but it doesn't alter the values the culture has. The art of the area is very unique and reflects things of the environment and areas of life that are very important to the Egyptian people. Most of the art of pyramids, hieroglyphics, stone carvings, and paintings of the pharaoh! The colors they use each have their own meaning. -RED symbolizes power -GREEN represents new life and growth -YELLOW stands for eternal qualities -WHITE exemplifies purity and sacredness -BLACK is the choice for death, the underworld, or night -and BLUE is the color of creation and rebirth What you wear often determines who you are in any culture, especially in Egypt. Peasant women would wear a gallebaya outdoors. Women in public wear a type of dress called a tob sebleh. Many city women wear a melaya luf, a wrap for modesty; a bur'a, a long face veil; or a headscarf called a mandil. Male clothing tends to be more basic and simple. Their attire consists of a long shirt, known as a gallibaya, and over that is often a striped kaftan. Sometimes they will even wear a longer gown over the kaftan that reached their feet. A turban is worn, too, on many of the male heads. Food is a very important part of the Folk culture in Egypt. The most important sources of food are loaf bread, foul, koshari, and often falafel. The consumption of animal protein depends on wealth. In rural areas the traditional style of eating is on a carpet around a low round table, and everyone eats out of the same bowl. Many Egyptians that are Muslim participate in Ramadan which is a month of fasting during the daylight hours. A taboo that any Egyptian Muslim believes in, is the absence of pork in one's diet. They believe that the "pork animal" is in competition with them for the environment, so they avoid it. Folk culture still exists in small villages that are more isolated and mostly untouched by popular culture. |
Pop Culture
Popular Culture has influenced many areas in Egyptian culture like food, art/clothing, technology, and music. Anytime you come across some sort of fast food restaurant in this area, you know that you are in a place that has pop culture influence. Some of the fast food that has diffused are places like: *McDonald's *Burger Kind *Fuddrucker's *Hardee's *T.G.I. Friday's & *Ruby Tuesday Most of these places are found in large cities such as Cairo, and are widely available to everyone. The menus are altered to add folk food items and accommodate to the area. Compared to a traditional way of eating, in cities people eat around western style square and rectangular tables on regular chairs, and everyone has their own plate and utensils. Art really hasn't been altered in the Folk area. If popular culture influences any sort of art, people will paint or draw things that reflect western culture. None of the pure Folk areas of art are totally changed. The clothing of the area is almost always specific of the traditional ways of dressing. When popular culture does get to the clothing aspect of life, though, many people will wear clothes from modern western areas like the US or Britain. The environment also makes people lean to one way of dressing or the other. Just like in the United States, thousands of households are equipped with modern technology like television and the internet. Cell phones are popular in any area, so you know Egypt has them. Even though they have all this technology, not everyone uses it. Music, depending on what area you are spending your time in, reflects the area. In large cities, there are examples of music from our areas. Teens listen to the most up to date pop music, while many of the elders choose to listen to the folk music traditional of their time. There are concerts, many pop bands, and influences of the modern era. |
